April 10, 2025: Encountering the Eternal Christ

Have you ever had a moment when time seemed to stop—when something eternal touched your ordinary day? That’s exactly what happens in John 8:51-59, a powerful passage where Jesus reveals His divine identity in the most stunning way.

“Very truly, I tell you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.” (John 8:51)

The people listening were shocked. "Never see death?" How could He say that? Even Abraham, the father of their faith, had died. Was Jesus claiming to be greater than Abraham?

In their eyes, Jesus was just a man—perhaps a prophet, a teacher, but surely not divine. Yet Jesus speaks with divine authority. He doesn't just speak about God; He speaks as God.

“Before Abraham was, I Am.” (John 8:58)

With these words, Jesus reaches across time. “I Am” – the same name God used when speaking to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). Jesus wasn’t just saying He existed before Abraham. He was revealing that He is eternal, without beginning or end—God Himself in the flesh.

No wonder they picked up stones! For them, this was blasphemy. But for us who believe, this is the deepest truth of our faith: Jesus is not just a wise teacher—He is the eternal Word made flesh, the one who conquered death and offers us eternal life.

What Does This Mean for Us Today?

  1. Jesus is Eternal and Present
He is not bound by time. He’s not a figure of the past. He is the "I Am"—fully present in your today. When you pray, you’re not reaching out to a memory but encountering the living Christ.
  2. He Has Authority Over Life and Death
Jesus promises that those who keep His word—who abide in His love—will never see death. He’s not talking about avoiding physical death, but the eternal separation from God. In Him, we have the hope of eternal life.
  3. Faith Requires Surrender
Like the people in this passage, we often wrestle with Jesus’ words. They challenge our logic, our pride, our control. But faith is not about having all the answers—it’s about surrendering to the One who is the answer.

A Personal Invitation

When Jesus says, “I Am,” He is inviting you to trust Him—not just for heaven someday, but for your life right now. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He sees you, knows you, and loves you.

Can you hear His voice today, cutting through the noise of fear, anxiety, and doubt?

“Before Abraham was, I Am.”
Let that truth rest in your heart today. The Eternal One walks with you.
