March 13, 2025: Whatever You Wish That Others Would Do to You, Do Also to Them

The Golden Rule, found in Matthew 7:12, is one of the most powerful teachings of Jesus: "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." This simple yet profound principle calls us to treat others with the same kindness, respect, and love that we desire for ourselves. But how often do we truly live by it?

The Power of Reciprocity

Imagine a world where everyone practiced the Golden Rule. There would be less conflict, more understanding, and an abundance of compassion. But instead of waiting for the world to change, Jesus calls each of us to start with ourselves. Kindness begins with you.

I once witnessed an act of kindness on a crowded train in India. An elderly woman was struggling to stand, and no one seemed to notice. A young man got up and offered her his seat. She smiled and blessed him, and soon, others started helping in small ways—offering space, carrying bags, or making room for one another. That one act of kindness created a ripple effect. When we treat others with love, it inspires them to do the same.

Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes

One of the greatest challenges in life is to see things from another person’s perspective. We often expect patience, understanding, and forgiveness from others, but are we willing to extend the same? Empathy is the bridge to true connection.

Consider a situation where a shopkeeper snaps at you. Your immediate reaction might be anger. But what if you knew that he had just lost a loved one or was struggling to keep his business afloat? When we pause to consider someone else’s struggles, we respond with grace rather than judgment.

Living Out the Golden Rule

To truly live by this principle, we must practice it in everyday life:

  • Speak kindly – The words we use can build someone up or tear them down. Choose words that encourage and uplift.
  • Show respect – Whether it’s a colleague, a stranger, or a family member, treat them with dignity.
  • Be generous – Share your time, resources, and kindness without expecting anything in return.
  • Forgive freely – Just as we desire forgiveness, we must be willing to offer it to others.

A Challenge for You

Today, take a moment to reflect: Are you treating others the way you wish to be treated?

Imagine if each of us made a conscious effort to live out the Golden Rule. One act of kindness, one moment of empathy, one choice to love—can change the world. It starts with you.

"Do to others as you would have them do to you." – Luke 6:31
