February 17, 2025: Is Asking for Signs Wrong?
In our
journey of faith, it’s natural to seek clarity, assurance, or even confirmation
from God. But is it wrong to ask for signs?
Both Gideon (Judges
6:36-40) and Moses (Exodus 3-4) asked for signs, not out of rebellion, but from
a place of humility and fear. Their requests were rooted in the need for
encouragement and conviction to fulfil God’s mission.
Jesus rejects
the request for signs from Pharisees and Sadducees. They had already witnessed
His miracles—healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding thousands—yet their
hearts remained hardened. They didn’t need more signs; they needed faith. Jesus
rebuked them, saying, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but
no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” This “sign of Jonah”
referred to His death and resurrection, the ultimate proof of His divine
authority.
So, is it
wrong to ask for signs? Signs that strengthen faith and help fulfil God’s
purpose are welcomed, but demanding signs as a prerequisite for belief is a
sign of spiritual stubbornness. The Pharisees demanded signs out of disbelief
and challenge.
Faith is not
built on signs alone but on a relationship with God, grounded in trust and
obedience. Signs can encourage us, but they shouldn’t be the foundation of our
faith. As Jesus said to Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet
have believed.” (John 20:29)
If you’re
wrestling with doubts or seeking direction, pray for wisdom and discernment.
God is gracious and meets us where we are, but He also calls us to mature in
faith, walking not by sight, but by trust in His unfailing word.
