March 9, 2025: Resist the Devil, and He Will Flee
One evening, a young
man named Daniel walked home after a long day at work. He was exhausted and
frustrated. As he scrolled through his phone, a tempting website popped up. For
a moment, he hesitated. "No one will know," a voice whispered in his
mind. But then he remembered his commitment to God. He turned off his phone and
prayed, asking God for strength. That night, he went to bed in peace, knowing
he had resisted the devil’s trap.
Temptation
Is Real
Like Daniel, we all
face temptations daily. It may not always be something obvious like an immoral
website—it could be anger, gossip, dishonesty, or pride. The devil knows our
weaknesses and tries to lure us away from God’s path.
Even Jesus Himself was
tempted by Satan in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-13). Yet, He overcame every
temptation by standing on God’s Word. His victory shows us that resisting the
devil is possible when we rely on God.
How
to Resist the Devil
1. Submit to God First
– James 4:7 starts with "Submit yourselves to God." Without
surrendering to Him, we are powerless against the enemy. When we humble
ourselves and seek God's help, He strengthens us.
Example:
John was struggling with anger and bitterness after losing his job unfairly. He tried to handle it on his own but found himself consumed by frustration. One Sunday, he heard a sermon on James 4:7 and realized he hadn’t surrendered his situation to God. That night, he prayed, giving his burdens to the Lord. Over time, his heart softened, and God opened new doors for him. By submitting to God, he found peace and a better job opportunity.
2. Use God’s Word as a Weapon
– When Satan tempted Jesus, He responded with Scripture. God’s Word is our
sword (Ephesians 6:17), helping us fight against lies and deception. Memorizing
Bible verses can help us in times of spiritual battle.
Example:
Lisa often battled feelings of unworthiness. Every time she made a mistake, she believed she wasn’t good enough for God’s love. But then she started memorizing Bible verses like Romans 8:1—"There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." When negative thoughts came, she fought back with Scripture. Over time, God’s Word replaced the enemy’s lies, and she learned to stand firm in her faith.
3. Pray Without Ceasing
– Prayer connects us to God’s power. When we feel weak, we must immediately
call upon Him. Jesus told His disciples, "Watch and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation" (Matthew 26:41).
Example:
Michael faced a difficult time when his son was diagnosed with a serious illness. Instead of relying only on doctors and medicine, he committed to constant prayer, asking God for strength and healing. Every time he felt overwhelmed, he whispered a short prayer, staying connected to God throughout the day. His faith deepened, and even as he waited for healing, he experienced an unexplainable peace.
4. Avoid Triggers and Traps
– If certain places, people, or activities lead us into temptation, we must
distance ourselves. Proverbs 4:14-15 says, "Do not set foot on the path of
the wicked; avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your
way."
Example:
Sarah struggled with alcohol addiction in her past. After turning her life around, she knew that going to certain parties or hanging out with old friends who drank would be a temptation. Remembering Proverbs 4:14-15, she chose to avoid those environments completely. Instead, she spent time in Bible studies and healthy social gatherings, keeping her commitment to sobriety.
5. Surround Yourself with Godly
People
– Being part of a strong Christian community helps us stay accountable. Friends
who encourage us in faith will strengthen our resistance against the devil.
Example:
David had recently become a Christian, but his old group of friends mocked his faith and pressured him to return to his old habits. He realized he needed support, so he joined a Bible study group at church. There, he met mature believers who encouraged him, prayed for him, and helped him grow spiritually. With their support, he remained strong in his faith and even helped some of his old friends turn to Christ.
Victory
in Christ
The devil may try to
entice us, but he is already a defeated enemy. When we resist him through
prayer, Scripture, and obedience to God, he has no choice but to flee.
Like Daniel, we will
face moments of struggle. But every time we choose righteousness, we grow
stronger in our faith. The temptation will come, but with God on our side, we can
stand firm.
Are you facing a
temptation today? Remember, resist
the devil, and he will flee!
May this Lenten season strengthen you in your fight against the devil.
