March 3, 2025: What should I do to attain Eternal Life?
One day,
a young man approached Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to
have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16). His question echoes in the hearts of many.
Is eternal life about obeying rules, doing good deeds, or something more?
Jesus
responded by pointing him to the commandments—honoring parents, loving
neighbors, and avoiding sin. The young man claimed he had kept them all. Then
Jesus gave him a challenge: “Sell what you have, give to the poor, and follow
me.” But the man walked away sorrowful, for he had great wealth.
This
story reveals a profound truth—eternal life is not merely about religious
observance or good works. It is about wholehearted surrender to God.
Steps to Attaining Eternal Life
- Faith in Jesus Christ – Eternal life begins with
believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior (John 3:16). Salvation is a gift,
not something we earn.
- Repentance and Obedience – Turning away from sin and
following God’s commandments reflect a heart transformed by His grace
(Acts 3:19).
- Love for God and Others – Jesus summed up the law
in two commands: Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as
yourself (Matthew 22:37-39).
- A Life of Discipleship – Following Jesus means
trusting Him above all else, even our possessions and comforts.
Eternal
life is not just about the future; it begins now in a relationship with Christ.
Like the rich young man, we must ask ourselves—are we willing to let go of
everything for the sake of Jesus? The answer determines not just our eternity,
but the depth of our life today.
