March 25, 2025: A Yes that Changed History
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” – Luke 1:38
Life often presents us with unexpected moments—some bring joy,
others bring uncertainty. But what if God called you to something so great and
life-changing that it filled you with both excitement and fear?
This is exactly what happened to Mary, a simple girl from Nazareth, when the angel Gabriel
appeared with a divine message: She would bear the
Son of God!
A
Divine Interruption (Luke 1:26-29)
Mary was living an ordinary life when, suddenly, the angel Gabriel
appeared, saying:
“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was troubled. Why would an angel visit her? She was just a young
girl, engaged to Joseph, living in a small town. Like many of us, she probably
felt unworthy and unsure when faced with something much bigger than herself.
Consider the story of Rosa Parks, a simple woman in Montgomery, Alabama.
One day in 1955, her normal life was interrupted when she refused to give up
her bus seat. That single act of courage sparked the Civil Rights Movement. She didn’t seek greatness, but when the
moment came, she answered with boldness.
Like Mary, Rosa didn’t know what the future held, but her “yes”
changed history.
God’s
Plan Revealed (Luke 1:30-33)
Gabriel reassured Mary:
“Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.”
Then, he revealed the impossible:
- She would conceive and give birth to Jesus,
the Son of God.
- He would be the Messiah, the King whose reign would never
end.
Mary must have been overwhelmed. “How can this be? I am a virgin!”
she asked.
This question wasn’t of doubt but of wonder. She couldn’t
understand how it would happen—but God’s plans aren’t limited by human
understanding.
Think of Moses. He was just a shepherd when God appeared in
a burning bush, calling him to lead Israel out of Egypt. Moses doubted—he
stuttered, he lacked confidence, and he asked, “Who am I?” (Exodus 3:11).
Yet, God didn’t need Moses’ ability, only his availability.
Like Mary, when God called, Moses said yes, and it changed the course of history.
Faith
Over Fear (Luke 1:34-37)
Gabriel explained, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you… for nothing is impossible
with God.”
This was Mary’s moment of decision. She could have let fear hold
her back. Instead, she responded:
“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”
She didn’t have all the answers, but she trusted God completely. This was a
leap of faith—one that would change the world forever.
Saying Yes to God’s Call
In 1950, a nun named Mother Teresa felt a calling to leave her
comfortable convent life and serve the poorest of the poor in the streets of
Kolkata. She didn’t have money, status, or resources—just faith. When she
stepped out in obedience, God provided everything she needed.
Mother Teresa once said, “I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God.”
Like Mary, she surrendered to God’s plan and became a light to the world.
What
Can We Learn from Mary’s Yes?
1. God Uses the Ordinary for the
Extraordinary
Mary wasn’t a queen or a religious scholar—just a young girl with
a willing heart. This reminds us that God calls everyday people to do great things.
2. Faith is Saying Yes Before
Knowing the Details
Mary didn’t have all the answers. True faith is trusting God, even
when we don’t understand.
3. Nothing is Impossible with God
Gabriel reminded Mary that her cousin Elizabeth,
once barren, was now pregnant. If God could do that, He could
certainly bring His Son into the world through Mary.
Are
You Ready to Say Yes?
Mary’s story teaches us that when God calls, we must respond with
trust, not fear. Even when we feel unworthy, uncertain, or
afraid, God
equips those He calls.
So today, ask yourself: What is God calling me to say YES to? It may not
be easy, but when we surrender to His plan, we open the door to miracles.
